The veteran bowler admitted that he hasn't figured out a reliable method to remove the Australian star and warns that the Ashes could become a drawn-out contest if England cannot dismiss the batter during the initial stages.

Smith's Dominant Record

The 36-year-old batsman, recognized as a top-tier contemporary cricketers, holds an outstanding average of 56.01 in Ashes cricket with 12 hundred-run innings to his name.

The right-handed batsman, who has participated in each England-Australia encounter since 2010-11, was the top scorer during both the 2017-18 and 2019 matches, scoring substantial run tallies while the English bowler was in the national team.

Broad's Frustration

"It's vivid in my memory when he scored that huge 239 in the 2017 Perth match and every delivery seemed to hit the perfect contact for three consecutive days," Broad shared on a cricket podcast.

"Whatever I bowled I aimed just connected perfectly with his bat."

"Smith has developed that unique mentality of the conditions favor me, and I'm determined not to get out."

Record-Breaking Performance

Broad managed to dismiss the batsman on 11 occasions in international tests - exceeding by three other bowlers - yet reveals he remains unaware of a consistent weakness.

His overall batting average of just over 56 rises to nearly 60 when on home soil. Solely the great the Australian legend with 41 hundreds has scored more than Smith's 36 Test hundreds for the Australian team.

Technical Challenges

Broad stated: "Obviously his method has developed over time, but I still cannot confidently state here's the method to dismiss him."

"It shows an incredible strength of his. He's incredibly challenging to confront. At times it appears like you haven't delivered a poor ball and it still goes for a boundary."

Current Performance and Readiness

The batsman's form showed some reduction between June 2023 and December 2024 when he experienced 23 batting opportunities unable to make a ton, but he returned to form with double tons against India in the previous season and added 141 and 131 against Sri Lanka at early 2025.

Following a 60-day pause, he started his buildup for this year's Ashes in October's final weeks and quickly registered a 118-run innings in his initial outing.

Game Plan

"For series victory, we need to contain his output to under 50, isn't that true?" Broad pondered.

"He'll inevitably get a century, that's what he does."

"Assuming he scores 40 runs, that represents at least 15 less than his usual output, so you're performing excellently. I believe you have to get him before he settles."

"Unless England fail to achieve his dismissal within the first forty scoring shots, it promises to be a long series."

Changing Strategies

England has tried multiple strategies to counter Smith's unconventional approach throughout a decade and a half of Ashes matches.

Broad discussed creating a fresh away-swinger specifically for Smith before the previous encounter, while England has targeted his pads, delivered outside from the third stump and experimented with the leg gully position during that year's matches - a contest where Smith started with two consecutive tons at Edgbaston.

Key Memories

"I recall when the English fielder was placed at that close leg-side position, and he kept diving left and right for the opening overs, barely failing to catch repeatedly," Broad described.

"Smith got away, made two hundreds in that match, extraordinary batting."

The bowler continued: "I remember attending a strategy session about the Australian batsman in that season and someone mentioned 'oh, you could try targeting his wickets early'}."

"Is that so, let's verify the frequency with which his stumps have been hit in Australian conditions during the last five years?' A single instance."

Fast Bowling Option

The upcoming series, which starts in the Western Australian city (02:30 GMT), appears likely to feature Smith facing the English fast bowler for the first test matchup since 2019, when he was famously troubled and hit by a short ball during the fast bowler's intense over at that famous venue.

Smith regularly mentions that Archer did not dismiss him in that particular Test - he had to retire hurt and was eventually out lbw to Chris Woakes upon his return - though the bowler succeeded to dismiss him on the pull shot in an ODI during last year.

"Can Jofra Archer be that solution?" the bowler questioned. "Making him nick from back of a length, following the delivery."

"Because Jofra Archer possesses that angle of moving inward toward the stumps, is he able to bowl one that moves away? Smith's anticipating the delivery coming in."
