British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
