Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
