The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Fewer than a tenth of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it issues its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, over two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be treated with holistic and lifelong care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to broad availability to the injections that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the agency.

Even under the present best projected case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to expand access, through strategies including licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

People typically see weight reduction within a few weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion a year later of halting the medication, when their usual appetite come back.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain cancers.

Obesity affects people in every country and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
