Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and straightforward fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a kind of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior.
