Top Television Picks: 7 Can't-Miss Films This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of ageing. Demi Moore offers a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into hosting a workout series on TV. Forced aside thanks to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself called Sue, leading to an increasingly toxic connection between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a hiatus from writing about international wars to embark on a high-end voyage with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich guests. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Available now, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has made the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as precise similar to the collars sported by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to discover a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
